Novillos Ranch

Hidalgo County

DESCRIPTION

The historic Novillos Ranch has been owned by the same family for over 100 years. Its highly sought after red sand soils, and phenomenal brush diversity make this property an excellent hunting and cattle ranch notorious for growing big deer. This area is unique in its topography in that most of the property is a savannah with a great mixture of grasses and brush species open enough to hunt quail with dogs yet there are some caliche outcrops with black brush and some low spots with a darker clay soil.

Water: There are three electric powered water wells and two windmills.  The water wells serve extensive pipelines leading to five or more concrete troughs.  Surface water features are seasonal but can be enhanced by water from the water wells.

Wildlife: Abundant Whitetail deer, quail, dove, turkey, javelina, bobcats, few coyotes, and other varmints. No exotics are present.

Terrain-Vegetation: This ranch has an impressive amount of diversity in both brush and a rolling terrain. The soil type is primarily red sandy soil which grows all the necessary brush species to grow large whitetail deer and provide ideal habitat for quail, turkey and other wildlife. The brush species on the ranch include wild olives, Guajillo, Black Brush, Guyacon, Granjeno, White Brush, Persimmon, Prickley Pear, Cenizo, Huisache, Twisted Acacia, Spanish Dagger, Brazil and some scattered Coma and Ebony trees. The predominant grass on the ranch is Buffel grass with some sand drop seed and Guinea grass in the sandier areas.

Location: This ranch has paved road frontage on FM 1017 and FM 681 north of McCook, Tx and west of Linn, Tx in Hidalgo County.
